3 Jobs!

In today's session we all spoke about social media and what online platforms we use in order to gain work and experience.

We created a list of online platforms we could sign up to and that would help us gain work and experience, the list was as followed:

  • Productionbase.co.uk ( Image One)
  • LinkedIn.com ( Image Two)
  • ModelMayhem.com ( Image Three)
  • Buffer.com ( Image Four)
  • Mandy.com ( Image Five)
  • Starnow.com ( Image Six)
Image One.I signed up to  production base in order to gain more opportunities in the industry.(Pape,2017)
Image Two. I already had a linkedin profile however during this lesson I spent time setting it up.(Pape,2017).

Image Three. I also had a model mayhem profiles so I also spent time during the lesson on this.(Pape,2017)
Image Four.Once I had  set up my linkedin I then downloaded and  signed up for buffer, I then linked up all my professional social media to it which  I  will use to post all my posts to my different social medias. (Pape,2017)

Image Five. I already had a profile for mandy set up however I needed to spend time on setting up and getting used to how to use it.(Pape,2017).

Image Six. This is another platform I already had before this lesson however I needed to take time to sort out my profile.(Pape.2017).

We were given a task to do during the break, the task was to look at 3 jobs we would apply for and we had to consider the following :

  • Training
  • Travel
  • Requirements
  • Pay

Job #1

I found this job on mandy.com which is a film and tv directory.

Image Seven.A screenshot of the first job I found.(www.mandy.com, 2017)

Training?  Training may be required if you do not have any experience, however I have a knowledge of special effect make up so I would just practice the looks prior to the days of the shoot.
Travel? I used the trainline app on my phone to see how much travel would cost as I can't drive so I would have to go by train. However when I looked at the price for a return I was looking at tickets of £85.20 so taking that away from the £110 that left me with £24.80 from the job and as it is in Bristol and for two days I would have to have accommodation which the cost of the job wouldn't cover therefore I would be losing money.
Image Eight.Screenshot of the cost of travel from salford to bristol.(Pape,2017)

Requirements ? To be confident in creating the following special effects looks :
  • A slit throat from a knife
  • Gun shot to the leg ( wearing jeans)
  • Stabbing a knife into a foot.
Pay? £110 for the two days with 5 hours on set per day. However like I mentioned in the travel section once I have calculated the price of trains and then accomodation I would be losing money

Job #2

Image Nine.Screenshot of job #2 which I found on starnow.com. (www.Starnow.co.uk, 2017)

  • Training? A basic knowledge of make up application for TV/ filming and also the knowledge of how lighting can change make up.
  • Travel ? The job is in London so I would be using trains to get to London and then taxi/bus to the actual location.
  • Requirements ?  To be able to create and touch up neutral make up application with the use of dramatic lighting.
  • Pay ? Pay is included however it is only travel and lunch and on the post it mentions that the production dates are 1st - 2nd April therefore accommodation may be required which I would have to pay for myself, therefore I am losing money, especially as it is in London the price for accommodation will be expensive.
Have a look at the job here! https://www.starnow.co.uk/listing/839777/makeup-artist-wanted-music-video-melodic-hardcore-metalcore/

Job #3

Image Ten.Job #3 that I found that I would be interested in taking.(www.Starnow.co.uk, 2017)

  • Training ? Knowledge of creating realistic scars, cuts and bruises such as the anatomy of ageing of bruises, cuts etc.
  • Travel ?  It is based in Manchester so I would be able to use a range of public transport depending on which method was best ( train or bus)
  • Requirements ?  To create scars, cuts and bruises that look realistic.
  • Pay ? There is no strict pay however they mentioned about reimbursing for travel and materials used that I have used.

6 images of my work that represents me!

So for the lesson today we had to pick six images of our work that we think represents us as a make up artist. Here are the images I chose...

Image/Video One.
Video One. "feral" by hometruths.(CI RECORDS,2017)

genre : live performance ( filming)
technical skill: having five members of make up to do within a small time scale and working in conditions that haven't got great lighting.
does this piece of work serve my main focus? : Yes it does as this is exactly what I want to get into once I have graduated.

Image/Video Two.

Image Two.Theatrical ageing make up using a bald cap.( Pape,2015)
genre : Theatre
technical skill: applying and fitting a bald cap, creating a look that is strong close up but when placed far away it looks good.
does this piece of work serve my main focus? : Yes it does as this is exactly what I want to get into once I have graduated.

Image/Video Three.
Image Three.SFX zombie make up!(Pape,2015)
genre : Special effects / film & tv
technical skill: the teeth
does this piece of work serve my main focus? : Yes it does as this is exactly what I want to get into once I have graduated

Image/Video Four

Image Four.Post apocalyptic charity shop chic look(Page,2016)

genre : Live performance( filming)
technical skill: Getting the streaks under the eyes to look real and not fake.
does this piece of work serve my main focus? : It shows another side of what I can do that isn't special effect work.

Image/Video Five

Image Five.Black and white photography with brow blocking(Pape,2015)
genre : Black and white photography
technical skill: Brow blocking
does this piece of work serve my main focus? : Yes as it shows the skills that I will need in the special effects,tv,film and live performance industry.

Image/Video Six.
Image Six. Devil facepaint look.(pape,2015)
genre : facepainting
technical skill: getting a good base
does this piece of work serve my main focus? : Yes as it shows the skills that I will need in the special effects,tv,film and live performance industry.

During the lesson we then swapped images so then we could get peer assessed about how they thought our six images represents what type of work we want to go into. This was very beneficial part of the lesson as it really allowed me to open my eyes about my work and it gave me an incite into what other people think about my work. I feel like this really benefited me as I feel like I was bored of looking at my own work and I didn't think about what people looking at my portfolio would think of my work so this really helped me especially as I have an interview for my top up year next week. Kirsty was the one who peer assessed my work, giving her my six images this is what kirsty had to say about my work:
I can see that Ella wants to go into the specials effects industry.
Great elements of special effects.
I can see you love the gruesome area in this industry.
I can’t see any different mix sex models.
All Models are young and no older models.
No mixed race models.

My feedback from Kirsty allowed me to see what I need to improve on and I should include into my portfolio ,I feel like all the points Kirsty made are valid and I can totally see where she got these points from. I will definitely be taking Kirsty's points into considerations especially considering I have my interview for next year coming up and also my shoots for showcase.

My idea for the change concept!

After our meeting today where we spoke about our fourth and final concept we have finally come up with a concept we all agree on, the concept will be called "change" where we can all take inspiration about issues that we believe need to change, I have included a photograph below of our planning for this shoot where we all bounced ideas from each other therefore allowing for a lot of ideas to be said.

Image One.Our planning for the fourth concept for showcase, this is our initial planning where we bounced ideas from everyone in the class. (Pape,2017)
For my change shoot I have decided to create my look based on environmental pollution that affect wildlife with my main focus being on sealife.

My inspiration for this concept came from reading news articles along with watching videos that appear on social media.

I have included a moodboard below of some images that truly show how shocking this issue is and how badly it needs to change.

The shocking images that inspired my theme. ( bibliography included below)

Have a look at the website below in order to get more information as well as ways to help save the wildlife :

Birthday concept

Referring back to my initial moodboard ( http://ellapapemakeup.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/first-initial-mood-board-for-timeline.html )  the images that stuck out to me the most and where I have took most of my inspiration from is image one, image two and image three.

Idea #1
Taking inspiration from the day I was born ( bonfire night)

Idea #2
Taking inspiration from my zodiac ( Scorpio)

Idea #3
Taking inspiration from the star constellation of scorpio

However the idea I liked best was for me to take inspiration from they day I was born as I don't know many people who are born on bonfire night therefore my final image will look completely different and will have different inspiration than everyone else as I know people are taking inspiration from their zodiac and I personally feel that bonfire night is such a beautiful night with the fireworks and bonfires which I can hopefully portray in my look.

The first idea I had was to take the trend of faux freckles and to create colourful "freckles" that represent the fireworks that go off on bonfire night. I created a moodboard which I have included for you to all have a look at below!

Moodboard for my faux freckles idea, bibliography for this is below.

You can see on my moodboard the progression of my look which I will be doing for this concept, at the start of me creating my moodboard I was looking at faux freckles and how they are placed/ what are used to create them, for example if you look at image one, you can see that the make up artist is apply the freckles by using a pencil/ crayon. As my moodboard goes on you can see how my ideas go from faux freckles to colourful/glitter faux freckles.I feel like faux freckles can either look really good and realistic or they can look tacky and fake so this is something I would worry about when I'm creating my look. The freckles in image two I personally feel that they look realistic however when comparing them at image six I can see that they look too big and the way they are placed especially with the colouring they look very placed and they look like the festival make up you see. Image five is a very busy photograph as the glitter around the eyes and forehead seem to take much of the attention however you can see around the nose area that there are in fact freckles both normally coloured and glitter/ coloured, when I first saw this image I didn't like it however once I observed it and saw the freckles I started to like the colour and placement of the freckles, therefore it was the bold placement of the pink glitter that I didn't like. After I had finished my moodboard I created a design chart that was based from my research, I have attached that below.

Design chart #1  based around my faux freckles moodboard. (Pape,2017)
After I created my design chart I thought about the overall photoshoot and I decided that I would change my idea as I thought it wouldn't be striking enough so I started to think about what I could change, I then thought back to my initial moodboard where I included an photograph ( image three on my moodboard http://ellapapemakeup.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/first-initial-mood-board-for-timeline.html ) of a model where she had glitter placed all on her forehead, I had mentioned that I had really loved this image, so I started to get some inspiration from that image, I then decided to look at other images exactly like the one I included in my inital moodboard just to get some more ideas flowing.

Moodboard two - bibliography included below.

I really like the geometric shapes! However I have found by completing this research is that the colour scheme I like the most is when there is a black background with the colourful glitter placed on top. The representation I will be making to the black background and the colourful glitter is the colourful glitter is a representation of the fireworks and the black background is a representation of the dark night of bonfire night. The image I like the most is image Five, I love the sharpness of the triangle along with the contrast of the colouring choices, another factor I absolutely love is how the lips are a totally different colour than the rest of the make up. On image seven you can see the whole face is plastered in silver glitter with smoke coming from the models mouth, I love this idea and I feel like it can be related back to my birthday shoot as the smoke can represent the smoke coming from fireworks. Have a look below for my second design chart.

week four!

In today's lesson we talked about :
  • Social media marketing
  • Business networking platforms
  • Time management
  • SEO
  • Call to action
  • Widgets
I have already blogged about some of the subjects above as I didn't want to create a long winded blog post including everything!

SEO
I have posted a video below explaining SEO and what it is used for. SEO is a great way to get the most out of your website as this using SEO correctly will allow you to gain more searches from using keywords.
Video One. What is SEO and how does it work?(Bluehost, 2012)

Call to action
Call to action are words that urge the reader to take immediate action such as " click here" or 2 call now".

so let's talk social media....

How do I advertise and market on social media ?

I use a range of social media to market and advertise on such as :
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn
  • Google+
  • Youtube
And then I have all my accounts on networking websites such as :
  • Model Mayhem
  • Star now
  • Mandy.com
  • ProductionBase
When it comes to advertising I always post photographs of my work as I feel like photos will grab people's attention more than a written post however I do caption the photographs with a description and I include the call to action of " message me now!" in order for them to book in.

What habits create a splash?
Anything that is new and nobody has seen before creates a splash, for example the first time the unicorn highlighter was seen it went viral straight away.

How can you make it easier?
By adding all accounts to buffer which then allows you to schedule posts and set it to automatically upload so it uploads for you.

First initial mood board for timeline concept

So here is my thought process for some ideas that I could do for my timeline, from my initial research and ideas I feel drawn to create an image based on my zodiac which is scorpio.( to  make images larger please click on them!)

For my initial mood board I decided to follow from my thoughts on what I could base my image around, Image One is a photoshoot that was based all around zodiac signs so obviously as I am a scorpio I found the image from that shoot for the zodiac, one thing that I really loved about this image is how they have included the constellation for scorpio in the background as you will see in my moodboard image five is also the constellation for zodiac, I just feel like the idea of including the constellation or something relevant into the background is a fabulous idea that will complete whatever look I decide to do.

Image Two is all based around the scorpio animal however instead of it being a make up look, it is clear that this image is based around the hair however you can see the make up includes a very bold contour and I think the look also includes some kind of body art such as airbrush or painting as the model looks to have different shades to her skin and face which although the image is in black and white.I feel like the make up artist has done this to include different dimensions to the model in order for the overall image to be visually striking which will then ensure that the model isn't ignored in the image and that by applying this type of make up will allow the hair and make up to flow together. I really liked the idea of creating the tail of a scorpion, I think that with some practice I would be able to recreate this look. If I was going to recreate this look I feel like I would place a wire into the hair and then plait the hair, the wire would then give me the chance to then mould the hair into the shape of the scorpion tail which I would then secure onto my models head with bobby pins .

Image Three is probably one of my favourite photos in this moodboard, I have included this image into my moodboard as I thought this could be a representation of my birthday which is the 5th November (bonfire night). When I saw this image I automatically thought of the night sky ( black glitter) being lit up by the fireworks( the other coloured glitter), I love glitter however I find it really tricky to work with so if I was to do this look I would practice it for more than once in able to make it look as good as I can get it but I think this is a very unique way of me showing off my work rather than taking inspiration from my zodiac etc which I feel most people will be doing.

Image Four is my birthstone which is called Topaz, I included this into my moodboard as I thought this would be a good idea to get inspiration from, I have come up with many ideas from this such as; creating a whole shoot based on the stone taking inspiration from the colours and tones of the stone or using the colour of the stone as an overlay therefore having my final image shot in the colour of the stone.

Image Five is the constellation for scorpius which I mentioned and took inspiration from image one, I really love this idea as in my initial thought process I didn't think about the constellation for my zodiac and I could include this in various ways such as ;

  • doing a shoot based primarily on the constellation ( included in the make up )
  • including the constellation in the background of my model ( this could be done on the actual shoot or could be included by photoshop in post edit)
  • creating a prop of the constellation which my model would then hold up.
Image Six is a photograph of a bonfire with a firework going off in the background, I have placed this image into my moodboard as my birthday falls on bonfire night so for this concept I feel like it would be a good idea to incorporate something from bonfire night into my look such as :
  • taking inspiration from the colours of fireworks
  • taking inspiration from the colours of the bonfire
  • the movement of fireworks
Image Seven is the chinese animal for the year I was however I doubt I will include this into my overall look as there isn't much inspiration that I could take from the pig saying that, I could look into the traits and background of the pig. I feel like if I was to include this into any part of my look I would include it into the background or prop part of the shoot.

Image Eight and Nine are both music related, image eight is an event that happened on the day I was born, it was an Oasis gig where they played at Earls court. Image Nine is the cover art of the song that was number one when I was born, as I won't be taking any inspiration and putting this into my final look an option I have come up with the idea that if on the day of the shoot if I do it before the actual event I can get a videographer which then on the day of the showcase I can bring a laptop and place it somewhere for everyone to look at which I could then edit music onto the clip so I could choose to put on a Oasis song or gangsta's paradise which was number one when I was born, Another thing I could do that includes inspiration from image eight and nine is too have a live model on the day of the showcase and then where my model is stood to have the music playing or have an ipod with headphones near so then they have the choice to see what song/music that was in when I was born.

This has really helped me come up with ideas for showcase however now I seem to have loads of ideas so I need to start funneling ideas down to get my final image .

Stay tuned in for more showcase blogs!!!

MY SWOT PLAN.

Another task we were given during this lesson which I wasn't able to come in for was all about SWOT planning, if you don't know what a SWOT plan is,SWOT is an acronym for :

  • Strengths - Strengths are the things you have to offer your business that nobody else does, this could be services that you offer that no one else does or extra skills you have.
  • Weaknesses -  This is where you would talk about your weaknesses for your business or yourself, in this section you could talk about what you need to improve on ,what you think will make you not get a job, what other people think are your weaknesses etc.
  • Opportunities - Here is where you would mention factors which could improve your business. For example in this section you could mention the use of social media, you could also mention any ideas you have that could make your business stand out and be unique to any other similar business.
  • Threats - A threat is something that is out of your control, such as a new competitor who will be charging less for their services, so even though this is not your fault it will have a knock on effect of your business as you may lose clientele.

I have created a SWOT plan for myself where I am exploring my strengths , weaknesses, opportunities and threats.Doing this task has opened my eyes to what I need to work on to be able to succeed in the industry as it will allow me to become more employable.
