Looks on the night !

Live model.

Below you can see some images that were took on the night, I had my model dressed in the space cadet outfit I had purchased, however when I was speaking to my model about the day and the running order of everything I mentioned to her that I would need her to bring a pair of boots that she feels comfortable in due to the length of time she would be standing, on the day of showcase she informed me that she hadn't brought the boots therefore she had to wear the socks and plimsolls she came in, I was really disappointed in this because it made the outfit look weird and especially because I spent so much money on the outfit. I decided to not let that effect the night as it had been so many weeks worth of stress.

As I was applying the prosthetic piece I had a few problems , one was due to the colouring of the prosthetic piece as I decided to buy a premade prosthetic piece rather than make my own, I decided to do this as I didn't want to risk making a prosthetic piece of this kind and it not turn out well as I have not been taught nor do I really know how to make a piece like this. The prosthetic piece came with some latex around to help blend it into the skin however it was coloured lighter than my models skin tone therefore I had to spend a majority of my time trying to match it up however this was much more difficult than expected and in the images you can see that it isn't the correct skin tone.I had to come to terms that I would be able to get the exact tone simply because the prosthetic piece came coloured.

Another issue I had when applying the prosthetic piece was that due to the skin conditions that my model has that was oily therefore the latex was being eaten away by the oil on her skin this led the application to become very uneven and not blended properly, knowing that I couldn't present my model like that I decided to change my look slightly, I decided to apply some scab blood around the seas if my appliance to hid the parts of the latex that was being eaten away, i decided to use scab blood as it is a much thicker and stickier substance than normal blood therefore it will stick better onto the skin and appliance, it would also last longer . By doing this I managed to hide the edges however I didn't like how it looked. I accompanied my prosthetic piece with silver eyeshadow which I feel look beautiful contrasted with my models skin tone and I teamed that up with a bright pink lipstick in order to match the outfit.

If I was to do this look again I would focus more on apply the prosthetic as well as colouring it and also the lips as I was in a rush to do the lipstick and liner due to being at the venue all day setting up and then when I was back at the venue with my model it was a rush helping everyone get ready as well as my model. So if I were ever to do showcase again I would put my own work first.

My birthday concept

My birthday concept was my favourite photo out of the two, I feel like the colours stood out very well especially in the venue as it was quite dark which then made my image stand out, I feel like my image drawed people in which is exactly why I decided to go out of my comfort zone and try something new. "Change" Concept

My change concept I personally feel was my weakest, I loved my concept however the image didn't portray that, the photographer I used edited the images too much therefore the neck special effects which was meant to be the main focus was blurred therefore detail was lost. However my look was backed up by an amazing article that I found that I hope people read and was enlightened on. Have a look here for my full evaluation on this look as well as links of my planning.

This concept was shown in the same room where our change concept was, it was played on a loop which is exactly the type of style we were going for, seeing this concept playing was really bittersweet as we created this months before the showcase module started so to see if being played finally at our end of year showcase was really sentimental and it seemed like all our guests really enjoyed it as well. You can see my planning for this concept here

Evaluation of my change shoot

After being let down a number of 5 times by models I final got to do my change shoot,  see my previous blog posts about this concept here and here .

I had previously planned to do my shoot outside, near the river irwell however on the day I managed to shoot this look the weather was terrible so I had to shoot indoors , after speaking to the photographer about what I wanted and what he thought would look good we decided to go for natural lighting so that he would then be able to edit the images to make them look brighter etc.

Overall I wasn't really happy with the make up application, I imagined something much different in my head so I feel like I had hyped it up too much which is why I feel so disappointed, the fishnet tights didn't really work as well as I hoped, maybe I removed them too fast therefore it didn't work. Also due to models letting me down I ended up having to shoot on my flatmate and she was uncomfortable wearing the shell bra I had got so I had to alter my look to just a head and shoulders shot which I feel really let me down.

If I was to redo the shoot I would definitely apply some make up to the eyelids, I was planning to however on the day I decided to make it a natural mermaid look therefore the whole focus would be on the neck.

I have included some of the final images both the original and edited .

Finalising my live concept theme

As my chosen era for this concept is "futuristic" I have decided to create my look based on cyborgs , as technology is growing at a rapid rate and scientists are becoming more able to create things that appear in sci-fi films I feel like this is a thing that could actually appear in the future. My take on this will hopefully show that in the future I feel that people won't be able to tell who is a human and who is a robot due to the advances in technology , my inspiration started by reading this article here

I have previously done a post based on my initial ideas, you can see that Here

I have created a moodboard which I will include below.

The definition of a cyborg according to dictionary.com is " a person whose physiological functioning is aided by or dependent upon a mechanical or electronic device."(Dictionary.com, 2017)

Moodboard for live concept.Bibliography below.

For my look I have decided that I will be using prosthetic pieces in my look in order to create the illusion that the fake skin has been removed therefore exposing the mechanics. One of the main reasons why I have decided to use prosthetic pieces is as on the day of showcase I want it to run as smoothly and time will be of the essence so by using prosthetic pieces I am saving myself time.

From my research I came up with an idea that I am thinking about doing for my concept, I found a pre made prosthetic piece that I feel suits my concept ideally! You can click here to see the piece I found.
Image Nine.Design chart one including the prosthetic piece.(Pape,2017)

After completing my design chart I can help but feel although my look is very basic as it relays on the prosthetic piece as the make up would just be very natural, although I can justify my reasons for having a natural make up with my prosthetic piece application I can't help but feel that as this course is based on make up that I should include some more make up into my look, however with this prosthetic piece I feel that including some make up to the other half of the face could make it look unbalanced therefore I am thinking of changing my look.

After doing some research I managed to find another prosthetic piece that I feel that would suit my look and would also allow me to do make up application, you can see the prosthetic piece I will be purchasing here .

Image Ten.Design chart 2 using the new prosthetic piece.(Pape,2017)

I really like this new design and my key make up colour will be silver in order to match the outfit that I will be purchasing you can have a look here

My final birthday shoot!

Today was my shoot for my birthday concept!

you can see my planning for this shoot by following My planning for the shoot

I was really enthusiastic about this shoot however I was weary on the finish of the final look as I had concern that the triangle would be completely straight therefore I spent the lead up to this shoot practicing and imaging how to get it perfectly straight obviously with the natural curves of the face , the way I came up with was to apply surgical tape to the face in order to achieve the straight lines .

The night before the shoot my model cancelled on me so I was frantically was trying to find a new model, thankfully I managed to get one however I didn't have the chance to properly speak to my model so on the day I didn't know what to expect.

When my model arrived I cleansed her face while talking through my ideas and inspiration , while I was cleansing her face I was looking for any contra-indications or anything that might of needed me to change or alter my look.

One issue I was faced with was when I was plaiting the hair as my model had extensions therefore I couldn't do the hair design that I planned to do, therefore I had to adapt the hairstyle, thankfully prior to the shoot I had a back up hair design so I was prepared for this issue. you can see my planning for the hair part of my look by following Hair planning for birthday shoot

Overall I am happy with my final images however one thing I was really struggling with throughout the shoot was the symmetry of the triangle due to the natural curves of the face. So if I were to ever redo this look this is something I would spend on the most, however I feel that due to the contours of the face the make up looks like it is 3D therefore coming from under her skin which I really like.I have attached a few of the final images below so have a look at let me know what you think!

Finalising my change shoot!

After my initial moodboard about my change shoot ( which you can see Here ) this blog post will all be about finalising ideas for this shoot .

My look will represent how animals are being unnecessary harmed as a result of pollution,my idea for this look is to create a fantasy make up with simple special effects make up, I will be creating a mermaid who has been physically affected by the pollution therefore giving the viewers a shock factor as they see a human being injured in the way that these poor animals are.

Image One .Dark blue's and purples with a hint of pink mermaid make up with adornments to the face and body. (www.glamour.com, n.d.)
Image Two. Zombie mermaid/ this is exactly what I am going for on the neck however I will be including a plastic ring which you see on packs of beer/bottles. (www.popsugar.co.uk, 2016)

Image one and two are my key inspiration for my look as I love different aspects of each  make up. On image One I absolutely love the colouring that is used especially the metallic as this makes the make up to appear to have a wet look that you would expect a mermaid to have , another aspect of this make up I love is the use of adornments to the face and body, this is something that I will totally take into consideration when I am planning my look. The styling of the hair is another factor I like as it has a beachy vibe which again relates back to the fact that she is meant to be a mermaid therefore she would have natural wavy hair due to being in the water.

Image Two is an example of what special effect work I am planning to do on my model however I will be including a plastic ring such as the ones that you can see in my moodboard which I have posted the link above, this is the main feature of my look so I will be ensuring that the main focus will be drawn to this. I love the pose that the model is doing as well as the added blood on her hand as when you are bleeding it is natural for you to touch it, another thing I will be adding to my image is that I will be putting my model in a shell bra and then I will be placing fishing net all over her making it look like she has also been trapped in the netting just like we saw the animals in the blog before this.

Once I had this rough idea I started to create design charts for this look, I have posted them below for you to see!

Image Three.Design chart one.(Pape,2017).

Image one is the first design chart I created for this look, I took all the inspiration I had from the images above and also from my research on the pollution and the effects of sealife. After creating this design chart I decided that I will create another design chart trying out fishnet tights to see how that looks, I will also be including the slit throat in the second design chart.

Image Four.Design chart Two.(Pape,2017)

On this design chart I tried using fishnets to create the scales, I also included the starfish adornment that I will be applying,I really liked the effect that the fishnets created especially when compared to the hand drawn scales I created in image three.

Image Five.My hair design and special effects design plan.(Pape,2017)

My hair design is going to be very natural and simple, I will be curling the hair in order to give it a beachy vibe exactly what you would expect from a mermaid, I will also be including a starfish into the hair design to flow with the one I will be applying to the face. For the special effect work on the neck it will be a simple yet effective piece, I will apply the plastic rings with wax and then I will apply the fake blood around the area, once this is done I will then place the netting over the top of my model.

When I purchased the starfish they arrived white so I decided that I would paint them orange in order to add some extra colour to my look as well as to make them look as real as possible, I have included some pictures of that process below.

Hair design for birthday concept

My hair design for my concept will be taking inspiration from the scorpio pincers ,I have included a moodboard below.

To create my look :

I will need -

  •  two elastic bands that follow my models hair colour
  • Tail comb in order to work my models hair into place
  • L'oreal Elnett hairspray  which I will use to keep the hair in place during the photoshoot, it will also be used to help style the pincers on my models hair.

My idea for the change concept!

After our meeting today where we spoke about our fourth and final concept we have finally come up with a concept we all agree on, the concept will be called "change" where we can all take inspiration about issues that we believe need to change, I have included a photograph below of our planning for this shoot where we all bounced ideas from each other therefore allowing for a lot of ideas to be said.

Image One.Our planning for the fourth concept for showcase, this is our initial planning where we bounced ideas from everyone in the class. (Pape,2017)
For my change shoot I have decided to create my look based on environmental pollution that affect wildlife with my main focus being on sealife.

My inspiration for this concept came from reading news articles along with watching videos that appear on social media.

I have included a moodboard below of some images that truly show how shocking this issue is and how badly it needs to change.

The shocking images that inspired my theme. ( bibliography included below)

Have a look at the website below in order to get more information as well as ways to help save the wildlife :

Birthday concept

Referring back to my initial moodboard ( http://ellapapemakeup.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/first-initial-mood-board-for-timeline.html )  the images that stuck out to me the most and where I have took most of my inspiration from is image one, image two and image three.

Idea #1
Taking inspiration from the day I was born ( bonfire night)

Idea #2
Taking inspiration from my zodiac ( Scorpio)

Idea #3
Taking inspiration from the star constellation of scorpio

However the idea I liked best was for me to take inspiration from they day I was born as I don't know many people who are born on bonfire night therefore my final image will look completely different and will have different inspiration than everyone else as I know people are taking inspiration from their zodiac and I personally feel that bonfire night is such a beautiful night with the fireworks and bonfires which I can hopefully portray in my look.

The first idea I had was to take the trend of faux freckles and to create colourful "freckles" that represent the fireworks that go off on bonfire night. I created a moodboard which I have included for you to all have a look at below!

Moodboard for my faux freckles idea, bibliography for this is below.

You can see on my moodboard the progression of my look which I will be doing for this concept, at the start of me creating my moodboard I was looking at faux freckles and how they are placed/ what are used to create them, for example if you look at image one, you can see that the make up artist is apply the freckles by using a pencil/ crayon. As my moodboard goes on you can see how my ideas go from faux freckles to colourful/glitter faux freckles.I feel like faux freckles can either look really good and realistic or they can look tacky and fake so this is something I would worry about when I'm creating my look. The freckles in image two I personally feel that they look realistic however when comparing them at image six I can see that they look too big and the way they are placed especially with the colouring they look very placed and they look like the festival make up you see. Image five is a very busy photograph as the glitter around the eyes and forehead seem to take much of the attention however you can see around the nose area that there are in fact freckles both normally coloured and glitter/ coloured, when I first saw this image I didn't like it however once I observed it and saw the freckles I started to like the colour and placement of the freckles, therefore it was the bold placement of the pink glitter that I didn't like. After I had finished my moodboard I created a design chart that was based from my research, I have attached that below.

Design chart #1  based around my faux freckles moodboard. (Pape,2017)
After I created my design chart I thought about the overall photoshoot and I decided that I would change my idea as I thought it wouldn't be striking enough so I started to think about what I could change, I then thought back to my initial moodboard where I included an photograph ( image three on my moodboard http://ellapapemakeup.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/first-initial-mood-board-for-timeline.html ) of a model where she had glitter placed all on her forehead, I had mentioned that I had really loved this image, so I started to get some inspiration from that image, I then decided to look at other images exactly like the one I included in my inital moodboard just to get some more ideas flowing.

Moodboard two - bibliography included below.

I really like the geometric shapes! However I have found by completing this research is that the colour scheme I like the most is when there is a black background with the colourful glitter placed on top. The representation I will be making to the black background and the colourful glitter is the colourful glitter is a representation of the fireworks and the black background is a representation of the dark night of bonfire night. The image I like the most is image Five, I love the sharpness of the triangle along with the contrast of the colouring choices, another factor I absolutely love is how the lips are a totally different colour than the rest of the make up. On image seven you can see the whole face is plastered in silver glitter with smoke coming from the models mouth, I love this idea and I feel like it can be related back to my birthday shoot as the smoke can represent the smoke coming from fireworks. Have a look below for my second design chart.

First initial mood board for timeline concept

So here is my thought process for some ideas that I could do for my timeline, from my initial research and ideas I feel drawn to create an image based on my zodiac which is scorpio.( to  make images larger please click on them!)

For my initial mood board I decided to follow from my thoughts on what I could base my image around, Image One is a photoshoot that was based all around zodiac signs so obviously as I am a scorpio I found the image from that shoot for the zodiac, one thing that I really loved about this image is how they have included the constellation for scorpio in the background as you will see in my moodboard image five is also the constellation for zodiac, I just feel like the idea of including the constellation or something relevant into the background is a fabulous idea that will complete whatever look I decide to do.

Image Two is all based around the scorpio animal however instead of it being a make up look, it is clear that this image is based around the hair however you can see the make up includes a very bold contour and I think the look also includes some kind of body art such as airbrush or painting as the model looks to have different shades to her skin and face which although the image is in black and white.I feel like the make up artist has done this to include different dimensions to the model in order for the overall image to be visually striking which will then ensure that the model isn't ignored in the image and that by applying this type of make up will allow the hair and make up to flow together. I really liked the idea of creating the tail of a scorpion, I think that with some practice I would be able to recreate this look. If I was going to recreate this look I feel like I would place a wire into the hair and then plait the hair, the wire would then give me the chance to then mould the hair into the shape of the scorpion tail which I would then secure onto my models head with bobby pins .

Image Three is probably one of my favourite photos in this moodboard, I have included this image into my moodboard as I thought this could be a representation of my birthday which is the 5th November (bonfire night). When I saw this image I automatically thought of the night sky ( black glitter) being lit up by the fireworks( the other coloured glitter), I love glitter however I find it really tricky to work with so if I was to do this look I would practice it for more than once in able to make it look as good as I can get it but I think this is a very unique way of me showing off my work rather than taking inspiration from my zodiac etc which I feel most people will be doing.

Image Four is my birthstone which is called Topaz, I included this into my moodboard as I thought this would be a good idea to get inspiration from, I have come up with many ideas from this such as; creating a whole shoot based on the stone taking inspiration from the colours and tones of the stone or using the colour of the stone as an overlay therefore having my final image shot in the colour of the stone.

Image Five is the constellation for scorpius which I mentioned and took inspiration from image one, I really love this idea as in my initial thought process I didn't think about the constellation for my zodiac and I could include this in various ways such as ;

  • doing a shoot based primarily on the constellation ( included in the make up )
  • including the constellation in the background of my model ( this could be done on the actual shoot or could be included by photoshop in post edit)
  • creating a prop of the constellation which my model would then hold up.
Image Six is a photograph of a bonfire with a firework going off in the background, I have placed this image into my moodboard as my birthday falls on bonfire night so for this concept I feel like it would be a good idea to incorporate something from bonfire night into my look such as :
  • taking inspiration from the colours of fireworks
  • taking inspiration from the colours of the bonfire
  • the movement of fireworks
Image Seven is the chinese animal for the year I was however I doubt I will include this into my overall look as there isn't much inspiration that I could take from the pig saying that, I could look into the traits and background of the pig. I feel like if I was to include this into any part of my look I would include it into the background or prop part of the shoot.

Image Eight and Nine are both music related, image eight is an event that happened on the day I was born, it was an Oasis gig where they played at Earls court. Image Nine is the cover art of the song that was number one when I was born, as I won't be taking any inspiration and putting this into my final look an option I have come up with the idea that if on the day of the shoot if I do it before the actual event I can get a videographer which then on the day of the showcase I can bring a laptop and place it somewhere for everyone to look at which I could then edit music onto the clip so I could choose to put on a Oasis song or gangsta's paradise which was number one when I was born, Another thing I could do that includes inspiration from image eight and nine is too have a live model on the day of the showcase and then where my model is stood to have the music playing or have an ipod with headphones near so then they have the choice to see what song/music that was in when I was born.

This has really helped me come up with ideas for showcase however now I seem to have loads of ideas so I need to start funneling ideas down to get my final image .

Stay tuned in for more showcase blogs!!!
